Frequently asked questions

Clear answers to the most common questions about regulations and animal facility management.

General

What kind of organizations are your clients?+

We work with research centres, universities, hospitals and biomedical institutes, pharmaceutical companies, CROs, biotechs and biological producers, both in Spain and internationally.

Do you take one-off assignments and multi-year contracts?+

Yes, both. Our flexibility lets us handle anything from one-off advice to accompanying a multi-year project, and to work with both small facilities and large centres.

Regulations

What is AAALAC accreditation?+

AAALAC International is an organization that voluntarily assesses and accredits laboratory animal care and use programs against international standards of excellence.

Achieving and maintaining accreditation requires documentation, alignment of facilities and procedures, and a site visit. We support establishments throughout the whole process, from gap analysis to responding to the assessors.

What are Directive 2010/63/EU and Royal Decree 53/2013?+

Directive 2010/63/EU governs the protection of animals used for scientific purposes across the European Union, based on the 3Rs principle (replacement, reduction and refinement). Spain transposes it through Royal Decree 53/2013.

These rules set requirements for housing, care, staff training, project evaluation and the operation of the animal welfare body. We help establishments meet them and evidence compliance.

Services

What does an animal welfare audit involve?+

It is an independent assessment of the animal care and use program against applicable regulation and industry good practice. We review facilities, procedures, records, training and welfare management.

The outcome is a report with prioritized findings and actionable recommendations, useful both for internal improvement and to prepare for inspections or accreditation.

What is a designated veterinarian and when is it mandatory?+

The designated veterinarian is the role, required by Directive 2010/63/EU and its national transpositions, responsible for advising on the welfare and treatment of the animals housed at an establishment. Every user, breeding or supplying establishment must have one.

This role can be filled internally or externally. At Kenkox we act as an external designated veterinarian, providing independence, availability and proven experience across many establishments.
